From Poultry Science to Farm Finance

Country road in the fall

Hello!  My name is Alex Kissinger, and I am working out of the Sparta branch as a loan officer intern for Carolina Farm Credit.

I am currently majoring in Poultry Science at North Carolina State University with minors in both Feed Manufacturing and Agricultural Business, and will graduate in May of 2020.

I grew up in the mountains of Ashe County, North Carolina spending my summers working in Christmas tree fields with my uncle.  This is what introduced me to the agricultural lifestyle, and why I chose to pursue a degree in an agricultural sector.  I am always asked why I decided to study poultry even though I did not have a background in the industry, and the answer is that I sold eggs from my backyard chickens as part of a high school project, which got me interested in the commercial poultry industry.

This summer I decided to pursue an internship with Carolina Farm Credit because I wanted a chance to see the financial side of agriculture in North Carolina.  I have had a wonderful time with the association, which included a couple of days of training in Columbia, SC with other interns from throughout the AgFirst District, visiting local farms, and I am looking forward to the rest of the summer!
